<p>now is my least favorite part of class where everyone chants "ooooommmmmmmmm" together slowly three times because they haven't heard enough of that word in the 'om shanti' portion of class. i hate this part because everyone chants "om" with meaning but they don't actually know what "om" means. i was raised buddhist -- its actually sanskrit for 'gullible american.'</p><p>

<p>finally, we "namaste"' our way out of there, lugging sweat soaked yoga mats<p>  which are now as heavy as a tires (but not as sanitary.) i make a beeline for the locker room where i strip down naked, leap into the best shower ever, towel off, and step onto the scale. i've lost five pounds! (please don't respond to this blog saying it was all sweat. i don't believe you.) this gratifying moment makes the whole class worthwhile. although i will be far too sore to return for the remaining six days of my free week, i can't wait for two years from now, when my instant weight loss and yogi's high are the only thing i remember about this experience (and the people at the front desk have forgotten me again).</p>

of course, one session can't give you much a taste of anything and the experts agree with amanda -- it's important to find a club that feels right.
"it's really about community," said marlene chertok, a registered nurse and breast cancer survivor who has seen her st. louis-based club grow from single to double digits in the past few years. "it's just a place where people can come in and laugh, regularly. it needs to feel safe."
and that safety can come even in the least likely places.
rebecca foster, who works for the prison mindfulness institute teaching mediation and emotional intelligence skills in rhode island, teaches laughter yoga in men's and women's jails.

foster said. "you can't be tight and laugh at the same time. who knows how profound a difference it will make -- it may not make any difference at all. but at the very least there's a sense that in this moment, in this one place, i can be a kid again."
and for all of the promise of laughter's health benefits, many not yet scientifically proven, that may be the method's greatest strength.
"laughter feels good while we do it," provine said. "isn't that enough?"

even more unusual, vishvketu says, was how quickly and deeply jacobs took to the highly spiritualized, traditional form of kundalini yoga. “classical kundalini isn’t just something that you get one class in and then you teach,” he said.
jacobs, whom the guru bestowed with the spiritual name “raahi” (a hindi word that means “the one you meet along the way to enlightenment”), “was connected in a special way, and it was very powerful,” vishvketu said. “he is a wonderful soul, very inspiring.”
indeed he is. jacobs is among those rare few who have been blessed with a true pastoral gift. he has an uncanny ability to see and meet the needs of his students (whom he calls “yoga kin”). he’s also one of the most honest people of any age i’ve ever met.
“i feel things deeply, whatever it is, whether it’s someone else’s pain,” he says. “i’m predictably empathetic. and yet sometimes i can put a big wall up and be quite cold. i have a very soft heart — but i refer to myself as like a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich with burnt toast.”
raised as a roman catholic until his early teens, jacobs says he still “believes in christ” but now answers “yoga practitioner” when asked how he’d define himself spiritually.

"I think it's great stretchy clothing for dance," she says. "It's comfortable to wear and you feel very free when you're wearing it. I like the colours, the colours are really bright." Peer Kristen Inigo, 12, of North Vancouver, likewise has a busy activity schedule, engaging in track and field, volleyball, basketball and dance. "I like that it's a happy place and it's just really energizing to come in here," she says. "It's really great because the people here are really nice and the clothes are amazing." Across Marine Drive at Park Royal Shopping Centre's north mall is another store catering to the younger girl. Triple Flip is a Calgary-based retailer and its stretchwear is manufactured in Canada. "It's about active girls," says Shahina Elva, store manager. "It's that one-stop shop . . . for active girls to find clothing that they're comfortable in, basically from school to sports. We promote an active lifestyle obviously, but it's comfort too and style." Her No. 1 seller at the moment is the Valley T, a loosefitting draped top with dolman sleeves that comes in both Triple Flip's activewear fabric and cotton. Triple Flip has launched a search for "Flip Girls" to be featured in a local photo shoot for the store April 15. "We don't pick and choose anyone because we want to represent what girls are really like," says Elva. North Vancouver's Edgemont Village is home to Sofiabella, a tween clothing store for girls sizes seven-16. Founded by local resident Elena Grant, first as an online store (sofiabella) in 2009, and then as a boutique in 2010, Sofiabella is named after her daughter. "I carry on-trend clothing for girls that's cut appropriately for their bodies," says Grant. "It's not just miniature versions of women's clothing." "My business is really predicated on just really empowering young girls through fashion. It's all about feeling great and exuding selfconfidence and belief in yourself and it's not all about being sexy and being hot, which is the message that they're getting from a lot of other places," she adds. While Sofiabella primarily focuses on everyday wear and special occasion pieces (including offering an event dress registry so no two girls end up with the same outfit), activewear is also sold. One of the spring activewear trends Grant has noticed is '80sinspired off-the-shoulder tops paired with tank tops. The rising popularity of girls' activewear has also caught the attention of up-and-coming fashion designer Leora Elischer, 21. The Lions Bay resident is nearing completion of a bachelor of fashion design and technology at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. At the beginning of the school year, Elischer and her classmates were challenged to create a line to be featured at the annual graduation fashion show, dubbed The Show, set for April 3 at Richmond's River Rock Casino Resort Theatre. "We had to come up with a niche market, which is a market that's in need that isn't being serviced," she says. For her contribution, Elischer designed Ivy&ixie, a line of environmentally friendly dancewear for teen girls, ages 12-16. "It's really colourful and girly but still functional for dance," she says. Elischer designed 15 pieces and will present three outfits in the show. The first is a full body unitard with ruffle detailing and a cropped pullover. The second look is a tank leotard inspired by retro bathing suits with gathered side panels, and a long-sleeved top that's draped in the back. The final outfit is a short-sleeved leotard with a pair of leggings. Helping her with the line was her background in dance as well as recent experience as an intern at Lululemon. "That was super helpful as to how to construct it and how to make it actually function with all the right seaming and construction burberry handbags techniques that I learned while I was there," she says. Mr Romney wants to cut individual tax rates by 20% in all six brackets, reducing the tax the wealthiest Americans pay to 28% from 35%. That target is slightly higher than the 25% rate Mr Romney laid out earlier in the campaign. The tax rate for people in the lowest income bracket would drop to 8% from 10%, and would fall to 20% from 25% for those Americans in the middle. Mr Romney would maintain the current 15% tax rate on capital gains and dividends for households that earn $200,000 a year or more. Those earning less than that amount would pay no taxes on capital gains and dividends under his plan.

How to pay for all this, especially the across the board tax cuts? "Mr Romney offered no specific proposals to increase revenue through the tax code," reports the WSJ, "Instead, he would leave those decisions to Congress." Always a recipe for success. A federal appeals court invalidated the maneuver in a 2009 ruling, siding with the U.S. Department of Justice, which called Marriott's transaction and attempted tax benefits "fictitious," "artificial," "spectral," an "illusion" and a "scheme." Marriott had argued the plan predated government efforts to close such shelters. Employing another strategy, Marriott legally avoided hundreds of millions of dollars in income taxes thanks to a federal tax-credit program criticized and allowed to expire by Congress. Marriott has also shifted profits to a Luxembourg shell company. During Romney's years on the board, Marriott's effective tax rate dipped as low as 6.8 percent, compared with the federal corporate statutory rate of 35 percent.
